FLORIDA RUGBY UNION WOMEN’S HPP TEAM GOES 1-2 IN GEORGIA

The Florida Rugby Union Women’s team competed in the 15-a-side division of last weekend’s Atlanta 7s Rugby Festival, winning one game and losing two.

In their opening contest against the Cincinnati Kelts, the Florida ladies played a great defensive game but just couldn’t find the scoreboard in a 10-0 loss. Vicky Becerra (Fort Miami) made several thumping tackles, while Zoe Sanchez (Orlando) showed off her speed on a number of occasions.

Against the Harleblues in their second game, the FRU women really shined, coming away with a 29-17 victory. A first-minute penalty try was complemented by a pair of tries each from wings Mary Blizzard (Jacksonville) and Alison Beattie (University of Miami). Blizzard’s tries were particularly impressive, as she sprinted 50 meters for one score and 80-plus meters for the other.

In their final match, Charlotte were just too much for the Florida team, as they went down to a heavy defeat. Shannon Steele (Orlando) scored the only Florida try.

“I was so very proud of what this team was able to accomplish in such a short period of time,” said head coach Jason Schiessl. “We had two tryouts and one two hour session to put together a competitive team. That speaks volumes of the quality of players and the type of personalities on this team.”
